Thank You Nelson Mandela

July 18, 1918- December 5, 2013

A great anti-apartheid leader, the first black President of South Africa, a freedom fighter, civil rights activist, and advocate of peace, Nelson Mandela died yesterday (Dec. 5 2013) at age 95.

Mandela was integral in freeing South Africa from Apartheid rule which was severe racial segregation and forced relocation. Apartheid also stripped the black community of citizenship along with voting rights.

The Holidays are here. A prepackaged X-mas was already shoved on to store shelves before we had time to recover from Halloween. But before we are thrust into yet another greed driven melee over yet another black Friday discount-palooza, millions of Americans will take the rare opportunity to gather with friends and family and celebrate Thanksgiving.

I was asked recently by a mentor of mine to elaborate on some of my personal thoughts on race. Specifically, he wanted my reply to the question, “What exactly I feel as though I am owed by society due to the fact that I am bi-racial?” My response, “20 acres and half a mule…”

Sweat drips from the edge of my digitally colored bandana. I am peering over the edge of a gun the same camouflage color my entire outfit is matched to. My nerves tense as I see the first blurred enemy soldiers positioning themselves into a forward firing position,

Of late I’ve become a jack of a few trades I never would have imagined becoming a jack of. With an AA in film, a stillborn resume and a job market that won’t budge, yield or call back, my options have been somewhat restricted just lately. In my desperation, however, I’ve happened upon a most nurturing balm for the sting of unemployment.

Saudi Arabia’s Treatment of Women

Saudi Arabia goes by strict Sharia Law which is interpreted religious law according to Islam.  The country does not currently have a written penal code but instead sharia law is interpreted by each individual judge. Much of Saudi law is especially restrictive to women.  Currently, there is enforced gender segregation in almost all aspects of life.  Women are not allowed to drive, vote, hold office, be outside the home without a related male and head and body covering, or buy property without permission.
